Premium Fishing Package (3 Nights, 2 Guided River Days)
The Premium Fishing Package is designed for anglers who want more time on the water, greater flexibility in fishing styles, and a comfortable pace between river days. This three-night experience takes place at Rio Niño Lodge in the rural community of San José de Upala, with river access located just across the road.
Guests stay in private, air-conditioned rooms with en-suite bathrooms, providing a comfortable and quiet base between fishing days. Daily breakfasts and dinners are included throughout the stay, featuring a mix of home-style Costa Rican meals prepared at the lodge or delivered fresh from trusted local kitchens. Snacks and lodge beverages are available throughout your stay.
Fishing is centered on the Río Niño, a smaller and technical river system well suited for fly fishing and light tackle. The river is known for aggressive guapote (jaguar cichlid), strong machaca, and seasonal snook during higher water conditions. This is an engaging and hands-on fishery that rewards anglers who enjoy active casting, adapting to river conditions, and exploring varied water.
Over two guided river days, your guide will determine the best approach based on water levels, weather, and your preferences. Fishing styles may include:
- Drift fishing along productive stretches of the river
- Guided wading sessions on smaller water
- Scenic wildlife floats through quieter sections of the river
To maintain a high-quality guided experience, time on the water is carefully structured based on group size. Drift boat capacity is limited to three anglers per session and may be reduced to two in certain situations. Wading sessions are best suited for one or two anglers at a time. For larger groups or mixed preferences, a rotation schedule is organized so each guest has meaningful time on the water while others relax at the lodge or enjoy the surrounding wildlife.
This extended format allows guests to explore different sections of the river, adjust fishing styles across multiple days, and enjoy a more relaxed overall pace compared to shorter stays.
A typical stay begins with afternoon arrival, check-in, and a discussion of fishing plans for the following days. Days two and three are spent on the river, with early departures and return by midday or early afternoon. Guests can spend afternoons relaxing at the lodge before dinner. On the final morning, guests enjoy breakfast before checking out and continuing their journey.
