Classic Fishing Package (2 Nights, 1 Guided Day)

The Classic Fishing Package is designed for anglers looking for a relaxed introduction to fishing the Río Niño without committing to a longer stay. This two-night experience combines one fully guided river day with comfortable lodge accommodations in the quiet rural community of San José de Upala, with easy access to the river just across the road.

Guests stay at Rio Niño Lodge in private, air-conditioned rooms with en-suite bathrooms. Daily breakfasts and dinners are included throughout the stay. Meals are prepared at the lodge or sourced from trusted local cooks in the community, offering a mix of home-style Costa Rican dishes and fresh local flavors. Snacks and lodge beverages are available throughout your stay.

Fishing takes place on the Río Niño, a smaller and technical river system well suited for fly fishing and light tackle. The river is known for aggressive guapote (jaguar cichlid), hard-fighting machaca, and seasonal snook during higher water conditions. This is an engaging fishery that rewards anglers who enjoy active fishing, accurate casting, and adapting to changing conditions.

During your guided river day, your guide will select the best approach based on river levels, weather, and your fishing preferences. Options may include:

  • Drift fishing along productive stretches of the river
  • Guided wading sessions on smaller water
  • Scenic wildlife floats for a slower-paced experience

To maintain a high-quality guided experience, time on the water is carefully structured based on group size. Drift boat capacity is limited to three anglers per session, and in some cases may be reduced to two. Wading sessions are best suited for one or two anglers at a time. For groups larger than three, a rotation schedule is organized so each guest has meaningful time on the water while others relax at the lodge or enjoy the surrounding wildlife.

A typical stay begins with afternoon arrival, check-in, and a brief discussion of fishing plans for the following day, followed by dinner and a relaxed evening at the lodge. The second day starts early with breakfast and a morning on the river, returning by midday or early afternoon. Guests can spend the remainder of the day resting, exploring, or enjoying the lodge before dinner. On the final morning, guests enjoy breakfast and check out before continuing to their next destination.
